Do Not Be The Reason Your Home Catches On Fire by Aydan Corkern

When trying to keep your home safe from fires, remember to consider all surfaces to be potential fuel for any fire. Once a fire gets started it will keep going as long as there are things to burn. This will include the air in the room and you. A fire is a living thing that has no thought of anything except to keep living. If you can shut off its air supply, you can kill it, as this fire needs this air as much as its food. The food would be your things in your home. If you have small children or older adults living with you, try to make them understand the dangers of fires.

Always try to check to make sure that you do not overload any extension cord anywhere in the home including your bedrooms. If you are using one of these cords, make sure to check it regularly for any bad spots. If you find any, the best thing is to throw it out. Make sure to cut off the plug in and then at the spot that this cord connects the item to this cord. Doing this will make this item unwanted by anyone else and also make this person think twice before using it. Try to keep these cords out of the way so that you are not walking or standing on them.

Never leave items like matches or lighters in the reach of these children. If you happen to have candles burning, make sure that these are out of their reach also as these could start a fire. Never leave anything you have cooking unattended. Grease fires are a common cause of kitchen disasters. The kitchen is the place where you need a fire extinguisher the most. It needs to be where you can get to it easily and this is not necessarily right beside the stove. If the stove is on fire, it can be hard to get an extinguisher if you have to get too near the fire to reach it.

Sometimes you will have a house fire no matter what you try to do to prevent them, but it is comforting somewhat to know that at least you have done all that you can to stop one from starting. Placing smoke detectors around your home and making sure they work is the one thing that can alert you quickly the moment there is smoke. This can give your family time to get out of the home.
