Preventing Fires for Top Home Security

Author: Oswald Melman

When it comes to providing top home security for you and your family, you cannot take accidents for granted.  Although most people automatically think of burglar protection when considering home security, there are other things to think about as well.  Fires are the third leading cause of accidental home injuries and deaths, many of which can be prevented.  If you follow certain tips and security advice, you can protect you and your family from unintentional injuries.

There are several ways a fire can start inside a home.  Some of the most common fires are started when cooking.  No matter who is cooking, make sure that somebody is present in the kitchen at all times when the oven or stove is in use.  When using these appliances, somebody needs to be monitoring them at all times to make sure that nothing is at risk for catching on fire.  Keep all flammable objects at least three feet away from any open flame or hot surface.  Also keep in mind that your clothing is flammable.  Before cooking, make sure that you you're your sleeves up to prevent them from catching on fire and use oven mitts to prevent burning yourself.  Always be careful when cooking in order to help provide the best home security for you and your family.

Another common way that fires are started is by means of heating your home.  Space heaters are one of the leading causes of home fires due to the heat that is produced and the amount of electricity that is used.  As with the stove and oven, make sure that you keep any flammable items at least three feet away from your space heaters.  Also, do not use space heaters as the main form of heat in your home.  They are meant to be used to quickly heat up an individual room, not provide an entire house with heat.  When you do use space heaters, make sure that someone is always in the room, providing constant supervision.  If you use a furnace to heat your house, make sure that it is properly functioning at all times.  Have it regularly inspected to make sure that it will not malfunction and put your home in danger.  By controlling the things that are used to heat your home, you can prevent a great deal of fires.

A third common way that fires are started is by smoking.  If you allow smoking in the house, make sure that ashtrays are always used.  Use ashtrays that are deep and sturdy in order to effectively put out a cigarette.  Before emptying the ashtray into the trash can, be 100% certain that there are no hot ashes remaining.  Dousing the cigarettes with water before emptying the ashtray can ensure that any flames are put out.

If you use candles in your home, only keep them lit when there is someone in the room.  Never fall asleep with a candle lit and try to use candle holders that are made of glass or another inflammable material.  By making sure that candles are never left unattended, you can prevent many fires and provide your home with better home security.

Fire safety is often overlooked when it comes to home security.  In order to make sure your family is safe at all times, you not only need to protect your home against outside intruders, but also against dangers that may arise within your own home.
